How CurbKicks works

CurbKicks is a live map of free items left at the curb. Find something you need, or give away something you don’t — in under a minute.

Find free stuff

  1. Open the map. Allow location (or type an address) and see free items around you, nearest first.
  2. Filter. Search by keyword, pick a category, or widen the radius.
  3. Go get it. Open an item for photos and details, then tap Get directions.
  4. Tell others. Tap “I picked this up” so the listing is removed and nobody makes a wasted trip.

Give something away

  1. Post it. Add a photo, a name and a short description. Mention size and condition.
  2. Pin the curb. We use your location, rounded to about 10 metres.
  3. Print a sign. A FREE sign with a QR code lets passers-by claim the item and remove the listing.
  4. Manage it. Renew or remove it any time from “My listings”.

Frequently asked questions

What is CurbKicks?

CurbKicks is a free, community-powered map of items people leave at the curb for anyone to take. Neighbours post a photo and a pin; anyone nearby can see what is free right now, get directions and pick it up. There is no cost, no bidding and no account required.

What is a "curb alert"?

A curb alert is a notice that something usable — a sofa, a bike, a bookcase — has been left outside for free pickup. CurbKicks turns curb alerts into a live, location-based map so they are easy to find before the item is gone.

Is everything on CurbKicks really free?

Yes. Only items offered at no charge may be listed. If a listing asks for money, tell us with the Report button and we will remove it.

How do I post an item?

Tap “Post item”, add a photo, give it a short name and description, and confirm your location. Listings are reviewed by a moderator and then appear on the map. After posting you can print a FREE sign with a QR code to tape to the item.

Do I need an account?

No. Posting and browsing work without signing up. Your browser keeps a private key for your listings so only you can renew or remove them from “My listings”. If you add an optional email when posting, we also send you a private manage link.

How long does a listing stay up?

Listings stay live for 7 days and then expire automatically. You can renew a listing from “My listings” if the item is still there. Anyone who picks an item up can mark it as taken so others don’t make a wasted trip.

What should I not post?

Do not post anything illegal, unsafe, recalled, or hazardous (for example car seats past expiry, cribs that fail current safety standards, or mattresses with bed bugs). Weapons, drugs, animals and anything that is being sold are not allowed.

How do I stay safe picking things up?

Go in daylight where possible, take a friend for large items, bring the right vehicle and straps, and be respectful of the property and neighbours. Never enter private property or a home to collect an item — CurbKicks listings are for items left outside.

Does CurbKicks work offline or as an app?

CurbKicks is a progressive web app. You can install it to your home screen from your browser menu (or the Install button) and it will load quickly, even on a weak connection. Live listings still need a data connection.

How is my location used?

You choose an area by ZIP code or city/state, or explicitly tap the current-location button to share device location. CurbKicks does not automatically request GPS access. Your chosen location is used in your browser to centre the map and sort items by distance. It is only sent to our server as map coordinates to look up nearby listings. When you post an item, the pin position is rounded to roughly 10 metres. If you type a street address it is shown on the listing (otherwise the pin’s coordinates are). An email address is optional and never shown publicly. We store a one-way hash of your IP address for abuse prevention, not the address itself. See our privacy page for details.
